Dr. Dixon and her team were able to see my sick dog as a new patient very soon after I called. They are kind, compassionate, and take the time to listen. I especially appreciated Dr. Dixon’s honesty and transparency; she only recommended the tests, procedures, and meds that were truly necessary, keeping costs reasonable and fair.

I have written and re-written this review dozens of times to try to make sure it's thoughtful. I want to start with appreciating what Dr. Dixon offers to the community as a whole - affordable care by a provider who so clearly loves animals and respects their owners. I have seen several concerns regarding scheduling (and witnessed firsthand waiting 2-3 hours to be seen in spite of having an appointment) and I want to acknowledge that part of what impacts timing is how much time she and her staff are willing to spend answering questions and giving owners all the information they can. It's a trade off that you have to decide for yourself whether it's worth it. The earlier you schedule, the better off you are. Now for my concerns. My little guy has a heart murmur and (we thought) a potentially enlarged heart. Dr. Dixon requested I work with the other vet at her practice, Dr. Storozum, who she referred to her as her "heart and ortho guy." During this first appointment, I was also advised that Diamond Hill (DHAH) performs non-anesthetized dentals on cats (not sure about dogs) which I personally find to be inappropriate and inhumane. I encourage you to look into it before you agree to the procedure. During the follow up appointment with Dr. Storozum, without any testing (which he stated wouldn't tell him anything he doesn't already know), he diagnosed my cat with a significant heart condition and prescribed medications that I later learned could have done real harm. During the appointment, he also also stated that vaccines "kill" pets (they don't) and attempted to refer me to himself when he opens his own practice out of his home. I questioned the veracity of the diagnosis and I took my cat for a second opinion with a cardiologist in Charlottesville who confirmed my cat does *not* have dilated cardiomyopathy, the HCM he does have is mild and does not require intervention at this time, and that his heart is not enlarged. She also confirmed that my decision to discontinue the meds shortly after they were prescribed was the right thing to do for my cat's health and safety. About a month or so after all this happened, my cat needed medication for an issue I identified at home and which I suspect he likely contracted during our visit to this office. I called to ask that medication be prepared so I could pick it up the next day. When I arrived, it was not prepared, the staff asked me what dosage I wanted in spite of that being a better question for the doctor, told me the medication they were giving me was the same as what I asked for (it wasn't), nearly overcharged me until I pointed out the inaccuracy in price, and then proceeded to give me the canine version of the medication which did make a difference in dosage and could have caused my cat to become ill if I hadn't been paying attention. I do believe that Dr. Dixon and staff are trying to do right by both owners and pets; however, what occurred over the past couple of months was dangerous and had I not had several years of veterinary experience under my own belt, I likely would have followed recommendations that would have done significant harm to my pet. I think DHAH is an appropriate facility for basic necessities such as vaccines, HW testing, and flea/tick/HW medications; however, if your pet has ever been diagnosed with a significant condition by staff at DHAH, I strongly encourage you to seek a second opinion. I also want to encourage Dr. Dixon to strongly reconsider her association with Dr. Storozum given his attempts to redirect patients to himself as well as his irresponsible, overly confident diagnostic practices and spread of misinformation regarding vaccines.

I had a great experience taking my cat by for her first vet appointment. Staff was incredibly helpful and calming, and the doctor was very knowledgeable and answered all of my questions with an obvious wealth of experience. Highly recommend.
